The Yocto Project

Darren Hart, Open Source Technology Center, Intel Corporation

The Yocto Project aims to simplify the task of building an embedded Linux distribution. Having evolved from Open Embedded, the Yocto Project provides additional tools and meta data which take a lot of the frustration out of building a distribution up from nothing but recipes. The Yocto Project Linux kernel recipes offer some particular advantages over the traditional defconfig-and-patch-series approach. With a hierarchical branching scheme, the linux-yocto sources allow for fixes, features, and configuration fragments to be shared across board support packages. Features can be trivial or complex out-of-tree patch series like preempt_rt. This allows Yocto to be a vehicle for leading edge technology, while providing a high level of configurability to the developer. This presentation will elaborate on these topics and share some real-world use-cases where the Yocto Project is being put to the test.
