The process of introducing free software for safety critical systems is a process that may take years. We have been working on free software for the light rail system in Guadalajara Mexico since 2002. In this paper, we discuss the process of introducing free software for safety critical systems and the conditions that are favorable for free software, with experience from our work with the light rail system here in Guadalajara, Mexico.
