Problems regarding teaching Linux programming for Industrial realtime programmers
Peter Fodrek, Slovak University of Technology
Martin Foltin, Slovak University of Technology
It became regularity that the majority of students of Industrial Informatics fail their first Linux programming course. One of the causes is that they have never seen a command line interface (CLI). Another reason is that they have not enough time to program at University and refuses to install Linux at their home computers. Students who install Linux on their own computers or use Live Distributions on USB mass storage devices, almost never fail. University leaders downplay the need of Linux programming skills for industrial control; therefore, there are no new laboratories for industrial control using Realtime Linux.
After years, we are trying to get a grant to build a Unix/Linux Lab for networked industrial control systems. This paper describes how we plan to use this lab for motivation and demonstration as well as for teaching of Realtime Linux based industrial control systems.
