What is COOL?

COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry

  • COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
  • COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and emerging topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
  • COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" or "theorectical" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" pt "practical" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
  • COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
  • COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
  • COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

2:45pm to 3:30pm CET:

Practical part: Zephyr RTOS: From Idea to Integration, Peter Fecher, PHYTEC

3:30pm to 4:00pm CET:

Discussion and possibility to ask questions

Description COOL February 2026 edition:

Zephyr, often referred to as "the little brother of the Tux", is an Open Source-RTOS specifically designed for resource constrained devices. Having its roots in a proprietary operating system for DSPs it was renamed to Rocket and published under an Open Source-license in 2015. In 2016 it moved under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation and was released as Zephyr. Another ten years later it became the Open Source-RTOS for small devices with the largest number of commits and contributors. For our COOL series it's high time to take a closer look at Zephyr!

In the first part Tiago Monte of Nordic Semiconductor will introduce us to the Zephyr RTOS and tell us why it is a good choice for low power and secure connected wireless applications.

In the second part Peter Fechter of Phytec will walk us through the development of a real-world product based on Zephyr. We will explore how Zephyr’s rich feature set accelerates prototyping, simplifies system integration, and helps reduce overall development cost.

Recommended audience COOL February 2026 edition:

Software developers, software engineers, system architects, system integrators, field application engineers, product managers, process integrators.

About the speakers of the COOL February 2026 edition:

- Tiago Monte, Nordic Semiconductor: Tiago Monte is a Developer Marketing Manager at Nordic Semiconductor. With over 10 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, he has held roles in customer applications support, product management, and most recently in product marketing. Tiago’s focus areas include Nordic’s nRF Connect SDK, nRF Connect tools ecosystem, as well as cyber security. He strives to create content that excites and supports developers building and launching secure, cutting-edge IoT devices based on Nordic’s product portfolio.

- Peter Fecher, PHYTEC: Peter Fecher is an Embedded Engineer at PHYTEC, where he has been working for the past four years. His focus lies in developing low-power IoT devices and co-processor systems using the Zephyr RTOS.
