What is COOL?

COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry

  • COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
  • COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and emerging topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
  • COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" or "theorectical" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" pt "practical" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
  • COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
  • COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
  • COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Description COOL December 2025 edition:

When OSADL was founded almost 20 years ago, most of its member companies came from the mechanical engineering and automation industries and were therefore primarily interested in hardware-related programming and the corresponding programming languages. However, since OSADL's legal services are not limited to a specific industry, OSADL attracted members from all conceivable industries, and there are of course no restrictions on support for programming languages of any kind. This also applies to modern low-code and no-code platforms, which are not yet very well known but could potentially enable faster and easier realization of projects. Since such a platform was recently made available under an Open Source license, it was obvious to ask its manufacturer, who is also an OSADL member, to present the theoretical and practical aspects of low-code/no-code in a COOL session. Fortunately, both the development manager of Toplogic Software and a long-time user of this software have agreed to participate.

In the first theoretical part of the COOL session, Dr. Bernhard Haumacher of TopLogic will present the principle, background and concepts of no-code platform TopLogic v7 and also describe the reasons why a specific Open Source license was chosen and what this means for users.

In the second practical part, Volker Hanf, who has many years of experience with project steering at a German premium car manufacturer and a strong experience with enterprise data modelling, will use an example from the daily practice of a TopLogic citizen developer to show how no-code platform works.

Recommended audience COOL December 2025 edition:

Software developers, software engineers, system architects, system integrators, field application engineers, product managers, process integrators.
