What is COOL?

COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry

  • COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
  • COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and emerging topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
  • COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" or "theorectical" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" pt "practical" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
  • COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
  • COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
  • COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Description COOL March 2026 edition:

One of the Open Source communities that OSADL has collaborated with since its early days is the Open Invention Network. The OIN maintains the world’s largest patent cross-license and is largely responsible for mitigating the threat to Open Source software and especially Linux users that is posed by software patents. With two legal assessments (member login required) and several FAQ (member login required) OSADL has answered questions on the OIN license agreement to help companies decide whether to join OIN. Several OSADL member companies have become part of the OIN community of over 4,000 organizations and all others have also benefited from the global positive effect of OIN.

In the first lecture of this COOL session, Keith Bergelt and Armijn Hemel of OIN will show how the network protects Open Source software from patent threats and how it will continue to do so and even expand the protection.

The second lecture will present the experience of an OIN member in deciding to join the network and its way to doing so.

Recommended audience COOL March 2026 edition:

Internal and external legal advisors, IP lawyers, Open Source compliance officers, software developers and engineers, etc.

About the speakers of the COOL March 2026 edition:

- Armijn Hemel, Tjaldur Software Governance Solutions: Armijn is the owner of Tjaldur Software Governance Solutions. He is an active researcher of and internationally recognized expert in Open Source license compliance, supply chain management and binary analysis tooling. He studied computer science at Utrecht University in The Netherlands, where he pioneered reproducible builds with NixOS. In the past he served on the board of NLUUG and NixOS Foundation and was a member of the coreteam of gpl-violations.org. Last but not least, Armijn is the technical auditor of the OSADL License Compliance Audit (LCA).

- Keith Bergelt, Open Invention Network (OIN): Keith Bergelt is the CEO of Open Invention Network (OIN), the only institution focused on mitigating patent risk in open source software (OSS). OIN maintains the world's largest and oldest patent cross license. By safeguarding against patent threats, OIN has encouraged the adoption of OSS, the most significant driver of innovation in the 21st century. Funded by Google, IBM/Red Hat, NEC, Philips, Sony, SUSE and Toyota, OIN has over 4,000 community members.
Having previously led two hedge funds, served as a technology advisor for Texas Pacific Group, headed business development, IP, and licensing for the Kelso & Company portfolio company Cambridge Display, and acted as General Manager of the Strategic Intellectual Asset Management business unit at Motorola, Keith is a frequent speaker on corporate strategy, finance and intellectual property management.
