What is COOL?
COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry
- COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
- COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
- COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
- COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
- COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
- COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Description COOL October 2021 edition:
There is now evidence that next generation real-time communication over network can mostly be realized with Open Source and will require time synchronization between peers with a very high precision. As a general principle, the quality of the real-time performance directly depends on the precision of the time synchronization; therefore, it is assumed that it should be better than ± 1 µs. The usual mechanism of time synchronization does not necessarily include a time basis to obtain the "correct" time. But correct time – although only in the range of ± 1 second – is generally required to provide meaningful timestamps in logfiles. Unfortunately, the standard method to obtain the correct time i.e. network time protocol (NTP) delivers the timestamp information only with a jitter of not less than 10 to 20 ms which obviously is not sufficient. The more advanced method to obtain a correct time such as from one of the available global positioning systems may be difficult to use. This COOL edition is, therefore, dedicated to creating a highly accurate peer-to-peer time synchronization that simultaneously ensures that timestamps represent the correct local time.
The first slot established technology of this COOL edition will be given by Alexander Bähr from OSADL, who is, among other, managing and maintaining the OSADL QA Farm including the many different sub-systems for computer time management. He will give an in-depth presentation of the various aspects of using NTP and fine-tuning the client systems with respect to the requirements of real-time network communication. In the second slot future technology, Carsten Emde, also from OSADL, will extend the methodology of computer time synchronization with the precise time protocol (PTP, IEEE 1588) and its successors as outlined in IEEE 802.1AS-Rev. The OSADL QA Farm runs a number of test network links that are equipped with TSN and use various methods of time synchronization and obtaining the correct time. Results from these monitoring set-ups will be presented and pros and cons discussed.

About the speakers of the COOL October 2021 edition:
- Alexander Bähr: Alexander is a state certified technician with a focus on control engineering. Since his youth he has been enthusiastic about electronics and data processing, especially Linux and Open Source. During his further professional activity with the main focus on measurement technology and its data processing, he has successfully used the various options of Open Source software in his professional environment for many years. Now he works as a technical computer scientist at the Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL) eG.
- Dr. Carsten Emde: Carsten has a long history of professional activities in the field of software development, system integration and training, particularly for embedded system software. He is specialized on graphical user interface, robotics, real-time systems and on legal and business aspects of using Open Source software in industry. He has been managing OSADL since its foundation in 2005.
