What is COOL?
COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry
- COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
- COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
- COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
- COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
- COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
- COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Description COOL May 2022 edition:
Although covered already in recent COOL sessions, the topic of a company-wide Open Source policy cannot be stressed often enough. Experience from a number of companies that ask OSADL for assistance when introducing such a policy teaches us that in many cases it is more difficult than it appears at first glance. Therefore, Caren Kresse, OSADL, will once again talk about the basic principles of the OSADL Open Source Policy Template and explain in more detail how to introduce it. One of the most important activities when introducing a company-wide Open Source Policy is to find and establish an Open Source Compliance Officer (OSCO) and to spread the word within the company. The question often arises what specific training, practice and education an OSCO should have, but the answer is simple: Anyone in a company who has a certain enthusiasm towards Open Source software, gained some practice in either in-house or private projects and likes to communicate with others might be the right choice – irrespective of professional background. In order to better understand what are the issues, drawbacks and strategic steps of establishing the role of an OSCO in a company, OSADL is grateful that three external speakers agreed to contribute to this COOL session. All of them are either "real-world" OSCOs or otherwise involved with this topic. Raphael Dunker, SEW-Eurodrive, Nina Leveringhaus, Christ Electronic Systems and Bernhard Wlach, AVL LIST will share their personal experiences when taking over the OSCO role or establishing it in their company and talk about the challenges they are encountering in their everyday's practice.

Open Source officers, software developers and engineers, system integrators, internal legal department, external legal advisors, purchase department employees who deal with Open Source software, employees of QA departments, etc.
About the speakers of the COOL May 2022 edition:
- Raphael Dunker, SEW-EURODRIVE GmbH & Co KG: Raphael Dunker has been working for SEW-EURODRIVE since 1991. After being involved in different projects and responsibilities in the company Raphael is now responsible for the software development division for mechatronical systems. The main focus is software development for drive automation and includes embedded software for drive inverters and industrial communication components, human machine interface software and industrial IoT/edge solution software for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance (Linux, Docker, Open Source). He started as an embedded software developer for industrial communication during the time of “fieldbus war”, when different fieldbus technologies reached the industrial plants.
- Caren Kresse, OSADL: Caren Kresse holds a Master degree in Physics. Already during her studies she used and appreciated the large amount of Open Source software and she became acquainted with all aspects of Open Source communities. In particular, she specialized on legal aspects of conveying Open Source software and has been working on various aspects of Open Source license compliance with OSADL since 2018. Among others, Caren leads the OSADL Open Source Policy project and is deeply involved in the OSADL License Obligations Checklists project. Furthermore, she maintains the OSADL Docker Base Image.
- Nina Leveringhaus, Christ Electronic Systems GmbH: Nina Leveringhaus is Open Source Compliance Officer at Christ Electronic Systems GmbH. Already during her studies of business informatic she had points of contact with Open Source software and its licenses. Because of her studies, she completed training in Open Source compliance while working at Christ Electronic Systems. By becoming an Open Source Compliance Officer, she had the opportunity to further her education in this area.
- Bernhard Wlach, AVL LIST GMBH: Bernhard Wlach has worked exclusively in the software industry for more than 20 years in different areas including knowledge management, software quality management and software process management. Bernhard holds a master degree in business informatics and IT law & management and acts as an interface between software and the law. Since 2020 Bernhard leads the Open Source Program Management Office for AVL List GmbH.
