What is COOL?
COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry
- COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
- COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
- COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
- COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
- COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
- COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Description COOL April 2023 edition:
When looking at obligations of Open Source licenses even at first glance, it becomes evident that the huge amount of documentation material that has to be provided cannot be gained manually. Instead, we need automated or at least semi-automated procedures. And when comparing the various different ways of how software packages are maintained and distributed today, it becomes evident that no single tool fits all. Instead, we need different approaches that correspond to a particular project and the particular ways of how the project incorporates Open Source software. In earlier COOL sessions and workshops, tools such as ScanCode and FOSSology have been presented and discussed in some depth. However, there is another important tool that certainly also needs to be mentioned: The OSS Review Toolkit (ORT). ORT probably is the most comprehensive tool as it consists of several different individual programs to disassemble a software package, extract licensing information, provide the related licensing material and compose an appropriate disclosure document.
OSADL is glad that Sebastian Schuberth, a founder and maintainer of the ORT project, accepted our invitation to introduce ORT and report on the history and the current status of the toolkit in the theoretical part of this COOL session. As always, a COOL session does not stop here, but practical recommendations and reports from everyday's life of using a tool are also provided. To be able to do so, OSADL gratefully acknowledges the participation of two software licensing specialists that have gained a lot of experience when using ORT in their companies. In particular, Martin Nonnenmacher, Senior Software Engineer at Bosch.IO GmbH and one of the lead developers of ORT, will report on using ORT at Bosch, and Nikita Peters, Head of Open Source & Software Asset Management at Porsche AG, will do so when using ORT at Porsche. As always, in the subsequent discussion round after the talks participants can ask questions and further benefit from the experience of the speakers.

About the speakers of the COOL April 2023 edition:
- Sebastian Schuberth, ORT Maintainer: Sebastian Schuberth is an Open Source evangelist and automation enthusiast. He has more than 20 years of experience with contributing to and maintaining Open Source projects on the one hand, and crafting proprietary software on the other hand. Consequently, Sebastian tries to bridge the gap between the Open Source and commercial worlds by working with companies to properly make use of Open Source software, contributing back, and creating own Open Source projects along with healthy communities. As a founder of the OSS Review Toolkit project, a central part of this is to automate the legal checks for compliance processes.
- Martin Nonnenmacher, Bosch.IO: Martin Nonnenmacher is one of the lead developers of the OSS Review Toolkit (ORT) and a contributor from the beginning of the project at HERE Technologies in 2017. He is now working in the Open Source team at Bosch.IO GmbH on all aspects of automating Open Source compliance for a large variety of build systems and environments. Martin is currently leading the development of the ORT server project which aims to ease the adoption of ORT and improve its scalability.
- Nikita Peters, Porsche: Nik Peters was able to live out his passion for software and technology already in his school days and eventually studied business informatics in Vienna and Mannheim. He then worked in various areas as a freelancer, business analyst and project manager for many years. He joined Porsche in 2018 as a project manager for Customer Relationship Management before taking over as Head of Open Source Office at the beginning of 2020. Since September 2022 he is heading the department Open Source Office & Software Asset Management at Porsche. Away from his main job, Nik is a passionate basketball (NBA) fan and loves spending time with his young daughter.
