Design of a failure tolerant numerical control system

Hans-Peter Bock, Institute of Control Engineering of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Units (ISW)
Alexander Verl, Institute of Control Engineering of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Units (ISW)

The Institute for Control Engineering of Machine Tools and Manufacturing Units (ISW) has researched a continuous concept for a redundant, failure tolerant numerical control system. This research project accommodates the raising demands for reliability of machines in as well as for the increasing adoption of numerical controls in safety critical applications. Reliability means the ability of a numerical control to provide its specified function during the whole machining time. This can be achieved using a redundant design and will be shown by a demonstrator. This demonstrator, which is based on Linux with rt-preempt as well as SERCOS III is introduced in this contribution.
