COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures

Online event

What is COOL?

COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry

  • COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
  • COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and state-of-the-art topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
  • COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
  • COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
  • COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
  • COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

Discussion and possibility to ask questions

Description COOL September 2021 edition:

Container technology, in particular Docker, has nowadays reached a certain importance even for embedded systems, where containers are copied and distributed as part of a product. As is the nature of Free and Open Source (FOSS) licensing, copying and distributing FOSS requires fulfilling license obligations. While containers certainly simplify deploying software, fulfilling FOSS license obligations for containers is made difficult by their layered structure and the lack of compliance material in public repositories. In addition, a Docker image includes an entire root filesystem that generally contains various FOSS components in different layers, not all of which are visible when running the final Docker container. The base layer of all containers generally provides essential system components such as a package management system, a C library, and a shell. While license obligations for customized layers must be fulfilled individually by the distributor of the container, OSADL has created the so-called OSADL Docker Base Image to facilitate licensing of Docker containers. This base image is provided together with all required legal information and material needed to distribute it compliantly. A company may build their individual container images on top of the OSADL Docker Base Image and use the provided instructions to fulfill license obligations for the additional software to achieve license compliant container distribution.

The basic lecture of this COOL edition will be devoted to the OSADL Docker Base Image and show how a compliant container application can be built on top of it. It will be presented by Caren Kresse, OSADL, who maintains the OSADL Docker Base Image. The advanced lecture will exemplify the quality assessment of such a Docker image with respect to compliant licensing. A tool that was recently made available to assist checking license compliance is Tern. OSADL is glad that Armijn Hemel, expert in Open Source license compliance and owner of Tjaldur Software Governance Solutions, has accepted the invitation to once again speak at a COOL edition. He will use the Tern software package to examine the OSADL Docker Base Image for license compliance. While doing so, he will explain how the software works and how participants of this COOL edition may use it at their facilities.

Participants who would like to make themselves familiar in advance with the general principle of container technology and the related compliance challenges are invited to watch the video recordings of the COOL October 2020 edition on "Open Source software copyright issues with special focus on redistributing Docker images" that are available here -> COOL presentations October 2020 (OSADL member login required in order to display video of the advanced lecture.)

Recommended audience COOL September 2021 edition:

Open Source officers, software developers and system integrators, internal and external legal advisors, purchase department employees who deal with Open Source software, employees of QA departments, etc.
