Job Description

Position overview:

The Linux System Architect position will be in Innovation & Technology, the CTO office of the Industrial Automation business unit.

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Linux System Architect specializing in the field of industrial automation. As a Linux System Architect, you will play a crucial role in designing and implementing Linux-based systems for real-time industrial automation applications. Your expertise in Linux kernel, real-time system programming, and industrial applications and protocols will be essential in ensuring reliable and high-performance control systems.

What do you get to do in this position?

As a system architect driving Linux-based platforms for industrial automation, you’ll perform:

  • System architecture design: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including hardware engineers, software developers, and automation specialists, to architect Linux-based real-time systems for industrial automation applications, as well as defining related system requirements, performance metrics, and design specifications.
  • Linux strategy: help develop and execute on Linux strategies, aligned with Industrial Automation’s business and technical goals and objectives.
  • Linux kernel configuration and optimization: Customize and optimize the Linux kernel to achieve real-time capabilities, ensuring deterministic response times and low-latency operations. Implement and configure appropriate device drivers, interrupts, and scheduling policies to meet the stringent demands of industrial automation applications.
  • Performance analysis and optimization: Conduct performance measurements, analysis, profiling, and debugging of real-time Linux systems. Identify bottlenecks, latency issues, and system failures, and implement appropriate optimizations and improvements to comply with real-time requirements.
  • Real-time application development: Work with development teams to define real-time application frameworks on Linux platforms to maximize platform capabilities.
  • Industrial protocol integration: Interface with industrial communication protocols (e.g., OPC UA, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Profinet) to enable distributed, real-time operations of Linux-based control systems and industrial devices.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline. Equivalent industry experience will also be considered.
  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in Linux system development, with a focus on real-time systems preferably including industrial automation.
  • Linux real-time expertise: In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with Linux kernel customization, configuration, and optimization for real-time applications. Proficiency in debugging and resolving real-time issues, managing interrupts, and implementing scheduling policies.
  • Programming skills: Strong programming skills in languages such as C/C++, Python, or shell scripting. Experience in developing real-time applications and frameworks in a Linux environment.
  • System design and integration: Proven ability to design and architect complex Linux-based systems. Experience in integrating and testing complex software and hardware components within an industrial automation context.
  • Industrial automation: Familiarity with industrial automation concepts, protocols, and systems. Experience working with industrial communication protocols (e.g., OPC UA, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Profinet).
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a keen attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to identify performance bottlenecks, diagnose issues, and implement effective solutions.
  • Communication and collaboration: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and present technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated and adaptable: A self-driven individual who can work independently and adapt to changing project requirements. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
