Linux quality assurance at the OSADL QA Farm

by Carsten Emde, Open Source Automation Development Lab (OSADL) eG

Many computers easily pass the initial (e.g. cyclictest) smoke test when a PREEMPT_RT Linux real-time kernel was newly installed and is running for the first time. So far so good. But does the computer still perform when it is used in an industrial environment and has to execute real work instead of just an idle loop? Often not. The OSADL QA Farm was established exactly to close this gap and to test PREEMPT_RT Linux real-time kernels on a large number of systems with a wide variety of architectures, clock frequencies, memory sizes, load scenarios etc. This half-day hands-on seminar will explain the various tests using for Linux quality assurance at the OSADL QA Farm and run them on the participants' computers. At the end of the seminar, every participant will have profound knowledge how to examine an industrial computer for its suitability as a real-time control system.
