What is COOL?

COOL - Compact OSADL Online Lectures: Open Source meets Industry

  • COOL is an OSADL webinar series.
  • COOL takes place regularly once a month and covers new and emerging topics on Open Source software in industry, either on legal or on technical aspects.
  • COOL editions each consist of two lectures covering a special "Open Source meets industry" topic followed by a discussion round. The first "basic" or "theorectical" lecture provides basic knowledge with regard to the respective topic and the second "advanced" pt "practical" lecture dives deeper into the topic and highlights special aspects. The discussion round gives all participants the possibility to ask questions and discuss with the respective speakers and the audience.
  • COOL speakers are OSADL experts on the one hand and external specialists on the other hand who kindly agreed to share their expert knowledge on the respective topic.
  • COOL is a virtual event. The lectures are held by live video streams. Speakers will be available for questions and discussion in a video conference which will take part subsequent to the live video streams.
  • COOL in general is designed to provide support how to best and compliantly use Open Source software in industry.

COOL March 2026 edition

Expansion of the Open Invention Network (OIN)
Wednesday, March 25, 2026, 2pm to 4pm CET

Agenda COOL March 2026 edition:

2:00pm CET:

OIN 2.0 - a Sustainable Evolution in how Open Invention Network Supports and Protects Open Source, Shane Coughlan, Open Invention Network (OIN)

Discussion and live Q&A, Armijn Hemel, Open Invention Network (OIN)

Description COOL March 2026 edition:

One of the Open Source communities that OSADL has collaborated with since its early days is the Open Invention Network. The OIN maintains the world’s largest patent cross-license and is largely responsible for mitigating the threat to Open Source software and especially Linux users that is posed by software patents. With two legal assessments (member login required) and several FAQ (member login required) OSADL has answered questions on the OIN license agreement to help companies decide whether to join OIN. Several OSADL member companies have become part of the OIN community of over 4,000 organizations and all others have also benefited from the global positive effect of OIN.

In this COOL session, Shane Coughlan, Global Ambassador OIN 2.0, will explain how OIN 2.0, launched in January 2026, covers and protects even more Open Source software from patent challenges in a sustainable way. The lecture will be followed by a live Q&A session with Armijn Hemel from OIN.

Recommended audience COOL March 2026 edition:

Internal and external legal advisors, IP lawyers, Open Source compliance officers, software developers and engineers, etc.
